AI chatbot vs AI assistant: what's the actual difference?
If you've shopped for AI in the last year, you've heard "chatbot" and "assistant" used like they're the same thing. They're not, and the difference matters when you're picking what to buy.
Chatbot: the old definition
A scripted flow. "Press 1 for sales, press 2 for support." Linear, brittle, frustrating. The kind your bank uses.
If something falls outside the script, the chatbot fails. These are mostly dying, for good reason.
AI assistant: the new definition
A conversational AI that can hold a real conversation, ask follow-up questions, use tools (calendar, CRM, payment), and handle the unexpected.
The customer doesn't feel like they're navigating a menu, they feel like they're texting a knowledgeable employee.
How to tell which a vendor is actually selling
Ask: "Can it answer a question I didn't program in?" If the answer is no, it's a chatbot. If yes, it's an assistant.
Ask: "Can it take an action (book, charge, update)?" If no, it's just a Q&A bot. If yes, it's a real assistant.
